Motivating Children to Read

Donalyn Miller is a 6th grade teacher in language arts. She is also the author of The Book Whisperer: Awakening the Inner Reader in Every Child. She is known to make the most unwilling students willing to read and love reading.

Miller mentioned many interesting points to encourage reading. one tip that stood out was what she called “carry books.” Having a book with you at times when you are stuck waiting or bored like in a doctor or dental office, barber shop, shopping, etc… are really helpful. She mentions that every family member should have a book when leaving the house to give them something to do at those times when there is “nothing” to do.

In schools, there is a lot of talk about teacher read alouds and students being able to read aloud. Miller pushes that to the next level. she mentions that the third annual World Read Aloud Day hosted by LitWorld was held on March 7, 2012. She explains that this event unites 200,000 people in 60 countries. It is an event that builds community, exposes children to books, authors, and genres they may not know much about, and supports developing readers.

The third thing that I found interesting was that Twitter and Facebook was being encouraged as aiding with reading.

Be Glad Your Nose Is On Your Face

Be glad your nose is on your face,
not pasted on some other place,
for if it were where it is not,
you might dislike your nose a lot.
Imagine if your precious nose
were sandwiched in between your toes,
that clearly would not be a treat,
for you’d be forced to smell your feet.
Your nose would be a source of dread
were it attached atop your head,
it soon would drive you to despair,
forever tickled by your hair.
Within your ear, your nose would be
an absolute catastrophe,
for when you were obliged to sneeze,
your brain would rattle from the breeze.
Your nose, instead, through thick and thin,
remains between your eyes and chin,
not pasted on some other place–
be glad your nose is on your face!
